ASTEC was established in April 2001, as a "Kabushiki Kaisha", by management members and a group of visionary professors at the University of Tokyo. The idea was to build a real early stage venture capital firm to help succeed startups with innovative technologies and services.

In March 2002, ASTEC raised its first fund, ATIF, with 1,040million JPY. Investment focus of ATIF is startups with technologies from Japanese universities, including the Universtity of Tokyo. ASTEC has added fourteen companies to its portfolio, closely working together with its investors, mostly institutional venture capital companies.
